If you lived in Ancient Greece, which city-state would you choose to live in?
Democratic Athens or Militaristic Sparta?
Support your choice with 3 specific qualities/attributes of your city-state, as well as one disadvantage to living in the opposing city-state.

i will choose to live in the millitaristic sparta because they are so cool and when is the last time athens wins a war huh huh because when we go to war be always win we are the one that won the peloonisian war and athens didnt so we are the best and we dont have slaves like they do and our woman have people.
i would live in the militaristic sparta city state. i would rather live there because they have a great reputation for being great fighters and winning their battles. i would rather be with them because not that many people will mess with them, with the athens on the other hand just because their smart don’t mean they have a great army so they would be getting into battles all the time.
if i could live in ancient greece i would have to pick Sparta because of it’s awesome military training. of course while it does have it’s downsides like being killed at birth if you’re not adequate it’s heart is in the right place.
I would choose with the Democratic Athenians, because they are not ruled by anyone they get freedom on what they want to say, and because we were the ones that developed Tradegy >:(
&. Comedy
&. At last because we have a lot of great and cool looking art and such (:
I think that Sparta is better than Athens. Spartans were strong and very military based. Athens, while diplomatic, was lacked military strength compared to the Spartans. Spartans were very into woman’s rights. They’re women had to be just as strong as the men. I’d rather live in Sparta than in Athens, cause I’d be in better shape and know how to fight.
If I had a choice between those 2 cities, I would choose Democratic Athens. One Advantage we have with our city is, we are Democratic, we are not always focused on war, we like peace. We also don’t have camps that boys have to leave there families at such an early age. We believe in education, we believe in getting a good education. One thing that I don’t like about Sparta is that they throw babies off the cliff if they don’t live up to the standards at birth, which is horrible.
If I lived in Ancient Greece I would want to live in Athens. Athenians are very intelligent and skillful. I admire their talent in theater and arts. I also don’t believe in throwing babies off cliffs.
I would rather be at Militaristic Sparta because democracy will not protect you against a good attack, Sparta does have a good military to defend an attack from Persia.
i would rather be a athens because they are smarter, they have sea advantage, and healthy. sparta throws babys off the cliff…
I would choose to be a Spartan. I think both city-states have their advantages, but for me, Sparta would be better. One reason is the army. You wouldn’t have to worry about attack or having another country take over and force you into slavery. Plus, if you ever had to go to war, Sparta would have a better fighting chance. Another reason I would choose to be a Spartan is because women have rights. In Athens, though they say they are democratic, that is mainly for the men. The women don’t have much of a say in anything that goes on there. In Sparta, not only are the women included, they are encouraged to participate in the military and government. Go Sparta!
i wanna be in sparta because they are strong and they are warriors.
they won the trojan war.
they made a movie about them
I would rather be a spartan but I’m going to be an athenian because they are smarter with philosophers and art and we defeated the persians who WERE undefeated while the spartans were sitting around at home. Athens also has a democracy which in my opinion is a more effective way to run a country or city or state or whatever you’re trying to run and in Sparta they throw deformed babies overs cliffs they don’t even have to be deformed if the babies don’t way a certain amount spartans throw them over the cliff.
I would live in a militaristic Sparta because good military, better people, don’t drink wine all the time. Athens doesn’t have a very good military.
I believe that Sparta is better than Athens because the spartns choose war over beauty and they except nothing but perfection and the spartans are great warriors. One thing that i don’t like about Athens is that they are democratic and that they don’t like war, when war helps. It helps when you actually win the war cause then other places wont want to have war with a great armed force.
If I lived in ancient Greece I would have been an Athenian. The people rule in the democratic government, which is more fair for the citizens. Also, the Athenians were more focused on the family, where in Sparta the boys go off to train for war at 7 years old. The Athenians also had better entertainment and art. Last, I prefer Athens because, unlike Sparta who center everything on war, they highly value education.
If I lived in Ancient Greece, I would want to live in Militaristic Sparta because I wouldn’t have a complicated life style to live, just fight, eat, and sleep everyday. They had a really good army and could take on a lot of Enemy soldiers at one time, and had no fear of death. Everyone in Sparta, including women, were treated as equally as men, and had rights to because Spartan women were considered very important. Athens on the other hand, didn’t treat their women fairly and didn’t have as good of an army as Sparta did.
I am on the Spartans side due to I am planning on having a military future and the Spartans allowed women to train for the military. The Spartan women had more rights then the Athenian women did. Plus the Spartans valued discipline, duty, and strength over individuality, beauty, learning, and freedom. The Athens had slavery and death as a punishment for almost every crime done. So I rest my case that Spartans are so much better than the Athens.
if i had to be on any side i would choose to be on the milltaristic sparta because they have huge muscles, they were strong and mean, and there good hold off in attack for the guys that hate them..
If I lived in Ancient Greece I would be Athenian. I like math, and with Plato being a great philosopher in Athen; It would be a great advantage. Also the great Parthenon building, it was build with exact measurements all around. The Spartans on the other hand just cared about physical appearance, and they weren’t as smart as Athenians.
If I had a choice a would choose to be a Spartan because they are fierce warriors and treat their women with respect. Spartans beat Athens in every war.
I think I would rather prefer to be a athens. because they have a better democracy where everyone is treated the same, and not thrown off a cliff if you have something wrong with you. All sparta cares about war, all they do is train for war they take boys when their 7 and send them off to war already. so I choose athens, cause i would like to have some freedom.
I wold rather be Militaristic Sparta because a good democracy will not defend an attack from anyone. Unlike Sparta’s army that can hold off almost any attack. Besides I like it that the women have as much rights as the males do. The women are more imporant here because when the men go to war the women have to do everything. Thats why I would like to be in Militaristic Sparta rather than Democratic Athens.
I would like to be a Spartan because they have a militaristic system and in my opinion only Spartan women give birth to real men because they have to be taken at an early age and they are trained to be warriors of a great culture and also like to be able to meet one and talk to them. That and I just think that they are just really cool. Also they won 2 major wars in greece history.
If I lived in ancient Greece I would be a Spartan. I believe that the Spartan civilization was a very well brought up civilization. The way of the Spartan culture respects women and listens to the woman’s input and what they have to say, and I believe that is something I would want for my wife. I also think that the Spartan warriors is what I believe to be a true warrior and if I was to live in that time period I would want to be a militaristic Spartan. I don’t believe the Athens had a great army and good rights for women, and if they are smart that won’t stop them from being taken over.
I would have to choose to live in Athens. I think that receiving and education and attaining enlightenment is more beneficial than learning how to survive and battle. Both are great skills that could help an ancient civilization, however a society with more knowledge could expand further in the long run. Sparta was good with swords and battle, but Athens was good with words had a well established democracy. The pen is mightier than the sword I believe. Athenian government would talk matters of interest through and held educational conversations and debates whereas Spartans were great at war and battle. The people of Athens furthered the knowledge and developed many aspects of art, architecture, drama, literature, philosophy, medicine, science, government, democracy, even trial by jury, a process which without it modern day judiciary systems could be unfair and cruel. Both societies were great, but in the end I believe that Athens had greater and more notable accomplishments. Yaddadimean?
i would rather be democratic athenian. Because all spartans want is to have everyone be perfect and if you aren’t perfect then you get thrown away like a piece of trash. I also like the athens because they care more about the brains and and just looks and to me that is great cause no one is perfect and if you aren’t perfect then you are yourself and not what other people want you to be. My last reason would be because we they aren’t all about the war and winning they care more about the caring of other people
I should probably mention first off extraneously, but most importantly, I wouldn’t want to claim to be a Spartan solely based on the fact that I despise Murray High School and everything they stand for. However, I shall try to put that anti-Laconophilia (Non-Sparta-loving) bias aside for a moment.
When it comes down to deciding between Athens or Sparta, it really boils down to deciding between the mind or the body—the good old brain vs. brawn. Sure Athens had their Art and literature, but Sparta created something that took just as much talent. As a coach I can appreciate their ability to develop Warriors. As H D F Kitto, a Brittish scholar of ancient Greece, remarked: Spartans were masters “not of creating things in words or stone, but of men.”
However, Sparta did have a slave cast as well. Myron of Priene gives an account of how the Spartans treated their slaves (the Helots):
“They assign to the Helots every shameful task leading to disgrace. For they ordained that each one of them must wear a dogskin cap (κυνῆ / kunễ) and wrap himself in skins (διφθέρα / diphthéra) and receive a stipulated number of beatings every year regardless of any wrongdoing, so that they would never forget they were slaves. Moreover, if any exceeded the vigour proper to a slave’s condition, they made death the penalty; and they allotted a punishment to those controlling them if they failed to rebuke those who were growing fat”
And Sparta also had a constitution, though not a democratic one. In fact, the whole of Spartan society—including the “politics”—was for the benefit of their military (which, by the way, did beat the Athenians). Interestingly, during the Peloponnesian War the politics of democracy and corrupt statesman were partially to blame for Athens’ defeat. In fact, after the war, the Athenians were kind of ‘fed up’ with politics for a few years.
So, things don’t look too good for the brains end of the Brain Vs Brawn debate we have going. How can Plato, Aristotle and Socrates hold their water against the mighty Spartans? Well, luckily there is some condolence for the “smarty-pants”. We have to move a couple decades into the future and a little bit West to the Greek-founded island of Syracuse, home of one of the most famous mathematicians of all time: Archimedes. Syracuse was allied with the city states of Sparta and Corinth. Here, Archimedes not only ‘held’ his water, he understood it enough to discover the principal of buoyancy. [The idea dawned on him while bathing. He was so excited, he ran through the streets naked yelling “Eurika!” (I found it)]. He understood the principals of levers and force that he once remarked, “Fac pedem figat, & terram movebit” (Give me a place to stand, and I can move the earth.). In fact, Archimedes was so ahead of his time, that he was only a few minor details away from inventing Calculus (which Sir Isaac Newton invented almost 2000 years later). Not only did Archimedes have the brains, but he used them to defeat the brawny Romans under General Marcellus during the Siege of Syracuse. Accounts of the battle say that Archimedes devised defensive devices to counter the Roman efforts including a huge crane operated hook that was used to lift the enemy ships out of the sea before dropping them to their doom. Legend has it that he also created a giant mirror that was used to deflect the powerful Mediterranean sun onto the ships sails, setting fire to them. Unfortunately, while Archimedes played a major role in holding off the invaders, he later meet him death by the hand of the same army he had defeated. You can read the Wikipedia account:
“The successes of the Syracusians in repelling the Roman siege had made them overconfident. In 212 BC, the Romans received information that the cities inhabitants were to participate in the annual festival to their goddess Artemis. A small party of Roman soldiers approached the city under the cover of night and managed to scale the walls to get into the outer city. Killing the few guards on duty, the Roman soldiers were then reinforced by more men and then stormed the relaxing Syracusians as they slumbered and opened the city gates to the rest of their forces.
Marcus Claudius Marcellus had ordered that Archimedes, the well-known mathematician—and possibly equally well-known to Marcellus as the inventor of the mechanical devices that had so dominated the siege – should not be killed. Archimedes, who was now around 78 years of age, continued his studies after the breach by the Romans and while at home, his work was disturbed by a Roman soldier. Archimedes protested at this interruption of his work and coarsely told the soldier to leave; the soldier, not knowing who he was, killed Archimedes on the spot.”
As legend has it Archimedes liked to do his math by drawing in the dirt with sticks. Supposedly the Roman soldier walked on top of Archimedes’ work. His last words were “Noli turbare circulos meos!”—“Do not disturb my circles!”
Probably the most significant contrast between brawn and brain—and most meaningful victory in the debate, though I’m not sure for which side.
P.S. I promise I’ll quite writing essays on these blogs
I would rather be from Athens than Sparta. I think that intelligence is much more important than knowing how to fight in war. I also think that an established government helped Athens out in the end. Both Athens and Sparta were good city-states, I just would rather be a part of Athens.
I would rather live in militaristic Sparta because they have a very strong army that will protect our city. Also because Sparta beat the Greeks in wars. They treat everyone with respect but most importantly their women. (: When the guys go off to war the ladies are left with so much responsibility and they do what is needed of them and that’s how they get the respect they have. Also because the women have the equal amount of rights as the men do. They treat everyone equally.
If i could choose to live either in Sparta or Athens i would choose to live in Athens. I chose athens because i do not like war. I would rather live in a democracy where people can learn enjoy the arts, and its more of a civilized society then living in sparta would be.
i would choose sparta because of the fact that since they were a millitary power they had great power and could not be easily droped. they also only allowed the most well qualifyed babies live which promoted the strength of the nation. because of their strength they would not be opposed very often and because of that they were able to prosper for different advantages than the athens. the only thing that i can think of is because of the military power they did not really have much government influence
